Let your wife know that you always have her back

Marriage is a journey of love, endurance, and shared experiences. It can also present several challenges and tricky situations that can conceal all those memories in a twinkle of an eye when one of the partners is diagnosed with a medical condition.

The month of October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness globally, an illness that strangely affects women, especially in lower-income countries where the lack of awareness and early detection has continued to reduce life expectancy for women.

The World Health Organisation launched the Global Breast Cancer Initiative in 2021 to reduce the mortality rate by 2.5% per year and give women a better chance of surviving breast cancer.

In Nigeria, the Ministry of Health has launched several campaigns to educate women on the importance of early detection through screening and non-governmental organisations have continued to lend their voices too. A diagnosis can have a significant impact on your marriage and family as the experiences are often connected.
Show that you care

Make this a month of reflection and think of those women and mothers who have lost their lives battling breast cancer silently due to the lack of awareness or family support to seek early intervention.

Breast cancer can create distress, sadness and anxiety which can lead to a feeling of hopelessness about the future you have planned together as a couple if it is not professionally managed.
Every husband has the duty of care to protect his wife and lending your voice can start from your marriage by ensuring that your wife does the needful to protect her life and the stability of your family by presenting herself for breast cancer screening.

Knowledge is key
Knowledge is power, educate yourselves about breast cancer as a couple as the awareness is relevant to your happiness since you both made the commitment to love and care for each other in sickness and in health.

There are several credible resources which are available online and at healthcare centres across Nigeria, especially during this awareness month.

Social Media platforms like Facebook. Instagram, X formerly known as Twitter all have groups dedicated to breast cancer awareness and support where you can both ask questions and seek knowledge of breast cancer diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and support.

Be a curious and intentional spouse

Love is caring and early detection and treatment have proven to improve the survival rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer.
In this judgemental society, many women still suffer in silence even when they know where to seek help and for some, the fear of losing their husbands to another woman due to their ailments can take priority over their urge to seek help which eventually becomes too late.

An intentional man must be able to create a safe space where his wife can express her feelings and pains and even when she is scared to share her fears, his love and curiosity should break her silence.

Curiosity is a valuable element of a good marriage, when a woman is hiding her fears, her moods and emotion will often take their toil on her, therefore do not ignore the changes in your wife’s behaviour, give her the support she needs and follow her to get tested and break the chain of fear in your marriage.
